Omega 3 and Omega 6 - How Important Are They for Good Health?

Omega 3 and Omega 6 are two groups of fatty acids. Omega 3s is polyunsaturated fats (good fats) that are necessary for good long-term health. Excessive consumption of Omega 6 fatty acids is associated with such issues as high blood pressure and water retention. Omega 3s is necessary to help control these problems. Omega 3s have both DHA and EPA and Omega 6 fatty acids contain Linoleic acid.
Both Omega 3s and Omega 6s are found in plant oils such as soybean oil and flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil contains a fatty acid called ALA which breaks down into DHA and EPA in the body. Omega 6s are found in corn oil, walnut oil, sunflower oil, hemp oil and sesame oil. A ratio of Omega 3 and 6s should be 3 parts Omega 6 to 1 part of Omega 3 fatty acids.
When losing weight plant oils as mentioned above can be a detriment. Coconut oil especially is harmful for those who are overweight and/or obese. Consumption of fatty acids then should be from fish, fish oil, and seafood including shrimp.
Since most people don’t get enough Omega 3s in their diets, supplements are a great way to meet this nutritional need.
