What Are Omega-3, Omega-6 And Omega-9?

By Gabriel J. Adams

Take your vitamins! It’s a mantra we all hear repeated day in and day out from our elders and physicians alike. What they don’t say is WHICH vitamins we should be taking. So let us take a moment and examine a too often overlooked nutrient in our food diets.

We all know about the standard vitamins that you’ll see on the food and drug administration approved Nutrition Facts labels. These are found on grocery items and fast food menus. Such vitamins include: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Protein and so on. Those are the obvious ones.

We know that certain foods contain Vitamin C such as citrus fruits. We know that Calcium is found in most dairy products. Pretty easy stuff here…

And even though nutrition labels notate items like fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, sugars, and other adverse elements, they don’t mention one of the most positive fundamentals found in certain foods: Omega fatty acids.

Omega fatty acids are found in certain nuts (flaxseed and walnuts, for example), dark leafy greens (like spinach, kale, and greens) and certain freshwater fish (tuna, albacore, etc.). Although the Nutrition Facts approved by the FDA don’t mention Omegas, many products are now boasting the inclusion of these vital nutrients.

Omega fatty acids are essential fatty acids that your body needs for a variety of reasons. If you are concerned about the health of you and your loved ones, be sure to take on a new appreciation for Omegas starting now!

Despite their name they will not cause weight gain like fat, saturated fat and trans-fat do. Omegas are the healthy kind of fats that your body needs. They include Omega-3, Omega-6, and Omega-9. Many people overlook their existence, but those who are in the know swear by foods containing Omegas.

Clinical research has been increasingly proving that Omega-rich foods can help prevent cardiovascular (heart) disease, depression, arthritis and other health conditions. They have even been said to prevent many types of cancer. The verdict is in that Omega fatty acids are a necessary addition to your healthy, balanced diet. Now if we could just get that darned FDA to acknowledge it, we’d be all set!

Omega fatty acids are in the same predicament as public broadcasting: They are good for you, but they lack the commercial interests that drive them to the height of public awareness; but they also lack the junk that usually goes along with anything with too much financial backing.
